SELF-BUILD INFORMATION
Every year, over 14,000 self build projects are
undertaken by UK homeowners and self build enthusiasts.
The growth in interest in self-build has resulted
not only in larger, more attractive homes, but
an expanding market sector for the roofing industry
and particularly clay roof tile manufacturers.
|
 |
- On average a self-build costs around £147,000
to complete. Self-build houses are normally far larger
than speculative properties built by commercial developers
and 75% of these self-builds have up to four or five
bedrooms. This means that their roofs can typically
be around 15% larger than a speculative build. All
in all, the total roof area in all self-build houses
is estimated at 1.5million m2 per year, making the
self-build market one not to be sneezed at, particularly
by the clay roof tile industry.
- While most self-builders do not actually build the
houses themselves, but rather manage appointed architects,
contractors and sub-contractors, they are responsible
for choosing all materials and finishes.
- The self-builder’s primary objective is to
build a quality property that will not only look good,
but last a long time, and add value to the investment.
So, it is no surprise that clay is becoming more popular
with this sector and currently stands at around 20%
of the self-build market.
- Technically and aesthetically, clay provides self-builders with the best performing roofing product and
one which will add value and life to a property and
is already making a big impact on the self-build market.
- The roof is arguably the single most exposed surface
of any structure. All the more reason why self builders
should choose a roofing product that is able to withstand
the elements and still mellow and improve with age.
While clay may, at the outset, be regarded as a more
costly option compared with other roofing materials,
its authentic time worn appeal and low maintenance
costs are factors which spell ‘value for money’ for
most self-builders who want to build a roof to last
a lifetime.
